The SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) student chapter at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati was set up in the March 16 of 2009. The first faculty advisor of IITG SIAM student chapter was Dr. Siddhartha Pratim Chakrabarty.
The aim of this chapter is to unite BTech, MSc, Ph.D. students, postdocs and professors from all mathematically-oriented departments. The main objective of this chapter is to broaden the academic and organizational horizon of students. The other objectives of this chapter are:
- To further the application of mathematics to industry and science
- To promote basic research in mathematics leading to new methods and techniques useful to industry and science.
- To provide media to exchange the information and ideas between mathematicians and other technical and scientific personnel.
The SIAM chapter is open to both undergraduate and graduate students from any department. Students are encouraged and welcomed to participate in SIAM-sponsored events even if they are not members. Although Department of Mathematics is only currently involved department at IIT Guwahati but we are planning to include other departments in this chapter. We are planning to organize various events in this year for example, One day Conference, Ramanujan Day Celebration, LaTeX workshop, etc.
